Extended reality (XR)

Also known as: XRIn Portuguese: Realidade estendida (XR)

Short definition

Extended reality (XR) is the umbrella term covering virtual reality, augmented reality and mixed reality.

In plain language

XR is used when there is no need to distinguish the degree of blending between real and digital, for example in policies, regulations or studies that include several types of equipment. In a literature review on immersive technologies in healthcare, XR may group together studies with VR headsets and with AR applications. It is always worth checking which technology was actually used in each study.
