Exposure therapy
Short definition
Exposure therapy is a cognitive behavioural therapy technique in which a person faces, gradually and safely, situations or stimuli they fear, in order to reduce fear and avoidance.
In plain language
Avoidance maintains fear; repeated, controlled exposure allows the person to learn that the feared situation is tolerable. It can be done in real life, in imagination or in virtual reality. It is used, for example, in specific phobias and post-traumatic stress disorder, always led by a professional.
In practice, in an RVer session
RVer Exposure, with graded environments in which the clinician decides progression and no scoring, is in development and outside the medical device registration.
