Mixed reality
Short definition
Mixed reality (MR) is the combination of digital elements with the real environment, in which virtual objects are anchored to physical space and can react to it.
In plain language
The term comes from the idea of a continuum between the real world and a fully virtual one, described by Milgram and Kishino in 1994. Today it is mostly used for systems in which a digital object appears to sit on a real table or is hidden behind a real wall. Many current headsets do this through cameras that show the outside world (passthrough).
