Autism spectrum disorder

Also known as: ASD, autismIn Portuguese: Perturbação do espetro do autismo

Short definition

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterised by persistent differences in social communication and interaction and by restricted, repetitive patterns of behaviour, interests or activities.

In plain language

It is called a «spectrum» because characteristics and support needs vary widely from person to person. Differences in sensory processing are common, such as greater or lesser sensitivity to sounds, lights or textures. Support is individualised and may include communication interventions, occupational therapy and adapting the environment.
