Avatar

Also known as: virtual representationIn Portuguese: Avatar

Short definition

An avatar is the digital representation of a person in a virtual environment, which can reproduce their movements.

In plain language

It can be just a pair of virtual hands or a full body, realistic or stylised. Research studies the effect of having a virtual body, for example in rehabilitation, where seeing the avatar move a limb can act as a stimulus. It is also used to represent other people, such as a therapist, in a shared virtual space.
