Loneliness

Also known as: unwanted lonelinessIn Portuguese: Solidão

Short definition

Loneliness is the subjective, unpleasant experience of feeling that one's social relationships are insufficient, in number or quality, compared with those one would wish for.

In plain language

A person may feel lonely surrounded by people, and another may live in isolation without feeling lonely. Loneliness is therefore distinct from social isolation. It is common in older people, especially after losses, and is associated with poorer physical and mental health. Meaningful activities and contact with people who matter to the person are ways of easing it.
