Well-being

Also known as: subjective well-being, psychological well-beingIn Portuguese: Bem-estar

Short definition

Well-being is the state in which a person feels well, physically, mentally and socially, and evaluates their life positively, including pleasant emotions, satisfaction and meaning.

In plain language

It is not just the absence of disease: a person with a chronic illness can have moments of well-being, and a person without illness may not. In care settings, promoting well-being means, for example, offering meaningful activities, comfort and relationships. In regulation, «wellness product» has a different meaning, distinct from a medical device.
