Sociocultural animation

Also known as: activities programme, activity coordinationIn Portuguese: Animação sociocultural

Short definition

Sociocultural animation is the set of cultural, recreational, social and educational activities organised to promote people's participation, social contact and independence, particularly in care settings for older people.

In plain language

In Portugal it is a field with its own professionals, sociocultural animators, present in many residential homes and day centres. It includes, for example, workshops, music, games, outings, celebrations and intergenerational activities. When planned around each person's interests, it contributes to well-being and counters isolation.
