Immersion
Short definition
Immersion is the extent to which a virtual reality system replaces stimuli from the real world with those of the virtual environment, as described by its technical characteristics.
In plain language
Factors such as field of view, motion tracking, image quality and spatial audio make a system more or less immersive. In this sense, used by authors such as Slater, immersion is a property of the equipment and presence is the person's response. In everyday use, immersion is also used more loosely to say that the person became absorbed in the experience.
