Short definition

The home support service (SAD, serviço de apoio domiciliário) is the Portuguese social care service that provides care and services at home to people or families in a situation of dependency who cannot, temporarily or permanently, meet their basic needs or carry out daily activities.

In plain language

Teams of care workers visit the person's home for hygiene and comfort care, meal delivery, laundry, cleaning or companionship. It is often provided by IPSS and Misericórdias. It allows the person to keep living at home with support, and it is distinct from home healthcare provided by SNS teams.
