Is virtual reality bad for you? Side effects, risks and contraindications

Families, nurses and clinical directors all ask it, and it deserves a straight answer: what is described, what is not, and the concrete situations that call for caution.

The question always comes, and almost always in the same words: is this bad for you? Families ask before letting a parent try. Nurses ask before offering it to a patient. Clinical directors ask before signing a purchase.

It deserves a straight answer rather than a brochure.

Short answer: for the large majority of people, a virtual reality session run by someone trained is well tolerated. The most common unwanted effect is motion sickness, it is temporary, and there are known ways to reduce it. There is a small, specific set of situations where caution or prior clinical assessment is advised — they are listed below, plainly.

Motion sickness is the most common effect, and the most avoidable

It is called cybersickness and it resembles travel sickness: nausea, dizziness, cold sweat, sometimes a headache. It appears when what the eyes see does not match what the inner ear feels.

That is why the type of content matters more than the hardware. Real 360° video filmed from a fixed point, with no abrupt camera movement, is far less likely to provoke it than a computer-generated environment the user moves through. Short sessions, a seated person and the ability to stop at any moment do the rest.

If it happens: take the headset off, stay seated, wait. It passes.

What about the eyes?

This is the most repeated fear and the one with the least established basis. What the literature describes is temporary eye strain — the same kind you get after hours at a computer. There is no established evidence today of permanent damage to eyesight from normal use of one of these displays.

That said, it is still an area under study, particularly in children, which is exactly why the hardware manufacturer publishes its own health and safety guidance and why age limits exist.

Photosensitive epilepsy: the warning to take seriously

A very small share of the population has seizures triggered by flashing lights or patterns. This warning is not specific to virtual reality — it comes from video games and television — but it applies.

Anyone with uncontrolled epilepsy or a history of photosensitive seizures should not use it without prior clinical assessment. It is not a formality.

Older people: the real risk is a fall, not the screen

With older people, the concern is not the image — it is balance. Someone standing, with their field of view occupied, can become disoriented.

The answer is simple and operational rather than technological: seated, always accompanied. It is also why a lying-down mode exists — so someone bed-bound or reclined can have the experience without standing up.

Children and adolescents

Hardware manufacturers set their own age limits, and there are visual development reasons behind them. In RVer's case, the published answer is that it is not intended for children under 12.

Hygiene

Equipment shared between patients needs a cleaning routine between sessions, with attention to the areas that touch skin. It is not an exotic risk — it is the same logic as any reusable clinical material.

The situations where we advise caution

  • a history of severe motion sickness or vestibular disorders;
  • uncontrolled epilepsy or photosensitive seizure disorders;
  • being unable to follow safety instructions due to severe cognitive impairment.

When in doubt, the decision always rests with the responsible healthcare professional.

A published list of contraindications is not a sign that a product is dangerous. It is the opposite: it is the minimum to expect from anyone selling technology to be used with patients. Be wary of those who have none.

What changes when it is a registered medical device

Registration makes nothing magic. What changes is concrete: there is technical documentation, there is a risk assessment, there is an identified and accountable manufacturer, and there is a formal route to report an incident — to the manufacturer and to Infarmed.

RVer's base product is registered with Infarmed as a Class I medical device, no. CDM 94571546, and bears the CE mark under MDR 2017/745. For a Class I device that is non-sterile and has no measuring function, conformity is declared by the manufacturer, with no notified body involved.

An entertainment app downloaded from a store has none of this — which does not make it dangerous, it makes it a different thing.
