Why we made this page
An institution that uses RVer does not choose the headsets. They are ours, they arrive configured, and maintenance is on us. Even so, the question always comes up: why does RVer run on the Meta Quest 3, and not on something else?
The short answer is that it was a considered, analysed choice, not the first one to hand. We have practically one of each of these models to test. Of the Pico, we have about six.
The long answer is on a new page, Why the Meta Quest 3: eleven virtual reality headsets side by side, spec sheet against spec sheet, with the reason each one was ruled out. This article explains how to read it.
The first criterion ruled out almost half
The RVer library is close to 300 GB: around 50 videos in 360°, averaging 6 GB each. That size is what lets the video reach the quality a patient needs to feel they are there, rather than watching a screen.
Every video lives on the headset itself, so a session never depends on the care home's or hospital's network. That means a headset with 256 GB or less and no memory card is out from the start. That is what happened to the Meta Quest 3S, the Pico 4 Ultra, the Samsung Galaxy XR, the Meta Quest 2 and smartphone VR viewers.
The Pico 4 Ultra deserves a note: it came second. It has a good image and pancake lenses, but it only comes with 256 GB.
After storage, five criteria
In order of importance:
- Price. The headsets go into the cost of the service. A model that costs six times more does not make the session six times better for the patient, only the institution's bill heavier.
- No cable required. The Apple Vision Pro and the Samsung Galaxy XR do not work without an external battery connected by cable. In a session with a patient sitting, lying down or bedbound, a cable is one more thing to manage. The Quest 3 has an optional external battery, only for sessions longer than two and a half hours.
- A sharp image. Pancake lenses and 2064 × 2208 pixels per eye. A blurry image tires the eyes and raises the risk of motion sickness.
- Weight. 515 g. Above 650 g, like the HTC Vive Focus Vision or the Vision Pro, the weight starts to show, especially for someone with little strength in the neck.
- Prescription glasses. The Quest 3's lenses move away from the face, and the headset fits over each patient's own glasses. Many patients wear glasses, especially older ones. The Galaxy XR and the Vision Pro only work with prescription inserts bought separately, one set per person.
The ones with room that still did not make it
Five models had room for the library and still did not pass:
- Apple Vision Pro: almost €4,000, cable required, no prescription glasses, and it runs visionOS. The RVer app is Android.
- HTC Vive Focus Vision: 785 g on the head, Fresnel lenses, shorter battery life than the Quest 3 and over €1,000.
- Steam Frame: arrived in September 2026 and runs SteamOS, not Android. The version with room for the library costs more than twice a Quest 3.
- Play For Dream MR: about 650 g, and it needs an external battery to last past an hour.
- DPVR P2: common in healthcare projects, but it only tracks head rotation (3DoF) and weighs 690 g.
Red means the same for everyone
In the table, a red cell always means the same thing: the model falls short of a criterion written under the table. For example, 650 g or more, a cable required, not wearable with glasses, lower resolution or shorter battery life than the Quest 3, or not being Android. No cell is coloured by hand. If a model improves, the red goes.
The prices in the comparison are retail prices, headset only. They are not what RVer pays or what the institution pays: each RVer kit also includes a hard case, a washable silicone cover and other accessories, and the headset comes included in the service. Specs are the manufacturers' public spec sheets, checked in October 2026.
What changes if the market changes
The choice is not forever. When a headset comes out with room for the library that costs less or weighs less without losing image quality, we will test it, as we tested these. The Why the Meta Quest 3 page is updated when that happens, and shows the date of the last check.
Frequently asked questions
Which virtual reality headset does RVer use?
The Meta Quest 3, with 512 GB. The headsets belong to RVer and come with the service: the institution neither chooses nor buys them.
Why not the cheaper Meta Quest 3S?
Because it tops out at 256 GB, and the RVer library is already close to 300 GB. It also uses Fresnel lenses and has lower resolution per eye than the Quest 3.
Can patients wear their own prescription glasses?
Yes. The Quest 3's lenses move away from the face and the headset fits over glasses. There is no need to buy separate prescription inserts.
