A standalone headset is a virtual reality headset with its own processor, battery and storage, which works without a cable or an external computer.
In plain language
Because they do not depend on a computer, they are easier to carry from room to room and have no cable for the person to trip over or get caught in. The trade-off is battery life and lower graphics capability than a powerful computer. On an inpatient ward, they allow the session to be brought to the patient's bedside.
In practice, in an RVer session
RVer Headsets are standalone, with no cable, around 2h40 of battery life, and work without an internet connection.
