Inpatient admission

Also known as: hospitalisation, inpatient stayIn Portuguese: Internamento

Short definition

Inpatient admission is the admission of a person to a healthcare unit to receive care that requires them to stay, including at least one night, under the team's supervision.

In plain language

It may be in hospital (for example, in internal medicine, surgery or paediatrics) or in other units, such as continuing or palliative care units. A prolonged stay carries its own risks in older people, such as loss of mobility, delirium and isolation, so early mobilisation and keeping routines and contact with family are important.
