Delirium

Also known as: acute confusional stateIn Portuguese: Delirium

Short definition

Delirium is an acute, fluctuating disturbance of attention and awareness, with impaired cognition, caused by a medical condition, medication or withdrawal, and usually potentially reversible.

In plain language

It develops over hours or days and may present with agitation or, conversely, with drowsiness and apathy, which makes it easy to miss. It is common in older inpatients, after surgery and in people with dementia. It is a medical emergency: the cause, such as an infection or dehydration, must be sought and treated. Orientation, sleep, glasses and hearing aids help prevent it.
