Cognitive stimulation

Also known as: cognitive stimulation therapy, CSTIn Portuguese: Estimulação cognitiva

Short definition

Cognitive stimulation is a set of activities, usually in groups, that engage a person in thinking, memory, language and conversation tasks, with the aim of maintaining cognitive and social functioning.

In plain language

Unlike training a specific function, cognitive stimulation is broad and enjoyable: current events, word games, categorisation, music, conversation. It is especially used with people with mild to moderate dementia; NICE guidance recommends offering group cognitive stimulation to these people.

In practice, in an RVer session

RVer Neuro, with cognitive activities, is in development and outside the medical device registration.
