Dementia
Short definition
Dementia is a syndrome, usually chronic and progressive, in which decline in memory, thinking or other cognitive functions is enough to interfere with independence in daily activities.
In plain language
It is not a single disease, nor a normal consequence of ageing. It has several causes, Alzheimer's disease being the most common, followed by vascular causes, among others. Beyond memory, it can affect language, orientation, mood and behaviour, and it requires care that adapts to each person's progression.
