Data minimisation

Also known as: minimisation principleIn Portuguese: Minimização de dados

Short definition

Data minimisation is the GDPR principle under which personal data must be adequate, relevant and limited to what is necessary for the purposes of the processing (Article 5(1)(c)).

In plain language

In practice, it means collecting only what is needed and not keeping data «in case it comes in handy». For example, counting how many sessions took place in a service does not require knowing each user's name. A system designed this way reduces the risks of a data breach and simplifies the impact assessment. It is linked to data protection by design and by default (Article 25).

In practice, in an RVer session

With RVer, no user data leaves the device: the server receives only per-device statistics, and video calls with family are not recorded.
