Mindfulness

Short definition

Mindfulness is the practice of paying attention, intentionally and without judgement, to what is happening in the present moment: breathing, bodily sensations, thoughts and emotions.

In plain language

It has roots in contemplative traditions and has been adapted to healthcare, notably in mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR), developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn. It is practised through guided breathing or body-scan exercises. It is studied as support in managing stress, anxiety and chronic pain.
