Photosensitive epilepsy

In Portuguese: Epilepsia fotossensível

Short definition

Photosensitive epilepsy is a form of epilepsy in which seizures can be triggered by visual stimuli, such as flashing lights or certain high-contrast patterns.

In plain language

It affects a small proportion of people with epilepsy and is more common in children and adolescents. Typical triggers are flashes, images that alternate rapidly between light and dark, and striped patterns. This is why screens, games and virtual reality headsets carry warnings and photosensitivity is considered before use.
