Procedural pain
Short definition
Procedural pain is pain caused by medical or nursing procedures, such as venepuncture, vaccinations, dressing changes, repositioning or examinations.
In plain language
It is predictable, which allows it to be prepared for: informing the person, choosing the moment, using analgesia when indicated and techniques such as distraction. It is particularly relevant in children, people with burns and inpatients who undergo repeated procedures. Anticipatory anxiety can increase the pain felt.
In practice, in an RVer session
In RVer, the session can be done seated or lying down, and staff see on the tablet what the person sees, able to pause or stop at any time.
