World Children's Day 2026: the right to play, in hospital too

Among the rights of a child in hospital are the right to play and the right to know what will happen to them. They are kept, or not, in specific minutes.

World Children's Day, the UN day for the rights of the child, falls on 20 November. In 2026 it is a Friday, and many schools, hospitals and institutions will plan activities that week.

This article is about a place where children's rights are very visible: the hospital.

What World Children's Day is

On 20 November 1989, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child, the most widely ratified human rights treaty in the world. UNICEF marks the date as World Children's Day.

The 2026 theme had not been published at the time of writing; UNICEF announces it closer to the day, on the official page.

Children's rights in hospital

The EACH Charter, agreed in Leiden in 1988 and published in Portugal as the Carta da Criança Hospitalizada, sets out the rights of children in hospital. Among other things, it says a child should:

  • have their parents, or whoever stands in for them, with them;
  • receive information suited to their age and understanding;
  • be spared avoidable tests and procedures, with pain and fear kept to a minimum;
  • have the opportunity to play, take their mind off things and keep learning;
  • be in an environment designed for children, with their privacy respected.

None of these is an extra. They are how a child gets through a hospital stay without it taking over their whole life.

Play is not a break from care

A child in hospital is still a child. Play is how they understand what is going on, show what they feel and get back some control in a place where almost everything is decided by others. People who work in paediatrics have known this for a long time: activity rooms, play specialists and hospital clowns are there for that reason.

The minutes before a procedure

There are moments when two of these rights come together: information, and pain kept to a minimum. The wait before a blood test, a cannula, a dressing. Explaining what will happen, letting the child choose something, having the parents close: all of this helps, and none of it depends on technology.

Distraction is one of the tools studied for those minutes, and virtual reality is one of the forms of distraction researched in paediatrics (studies on children and young people).

An idea for the 20th

Our calendar of health awareness days suggests, on the paediatric ward, a mural where each child draws a right they think matters. It is a way of asking them, not just telling them.

Where RVer fits

RVer is a virtual reality system used in hospitals and care settings, with a library of 360° videos filmed in real places. In paediatrics it is used from age 10 (virtual reality in paediatrics). The child chooses the place, the parents see on the tablet what the child is seeing, and the session ends when the child wants.

It is run by the professional, and whether it makes sense, and when, is decided by the team caring for the child. It does not replace preparation, the parents' presence or any part of care.

In short

  • 20 November 2026, a Friday: World Children's Day.
  • It marks the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989.
  • In hospital, the EACH Charter puts those rights into practice: parents present, information, pain and fear kept down, play.
  • The minutes before a procedure are where several of these rights are kept, or not.
